Xiaomi has confirmed it’s bringing the Redmi 17 5G to India next month with a large battery and a Snapdragon chipset. The global version of the Redmi 17 was recently launched in Malaysia with a 7,900mAh battery and a vegan leather finish, which is the one coming to India, while the China Redmi 17 is another model with different hardware.

Redmi 17 5G India launch

Xiaomi has confirmed that the Redmi 17 5G will launch in India on September 3rd. The phone will be sold through Amazon, mi.com and offline retail stores, with pricing and configurations to be announced at launch.

We have no leaks on the India price as of now but for context, the Redmi 15, its predecessor in India, launched in August last year at Rs 14,999 for the 6GB RAM variant. However, it’s now priced from Rs 21,499. We expect the Redmi 17 to be priced a little above that only.

Redmi 17 5G specifications, features

The Redmi 17 5G has been confirmed to be India’s first Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 phone. The Qualcomm processor is designed for budget 5G smartphones and was unveiled in May. The phone will have a dual rear camera setup, as we can see in the teasers, probably with a 50MP primary sensor, and a centrally positioned punch-hole selfie camera.

Xiaomi’s teaser shows the Redmi 17 5G with a textured vegan leather-style rear panel and a contrasting camera island with rounded corners. It will be available in Eternal Orange, Endless Blue and Absolute Black.

The 7,900mAh battery is the biggest selling point, increasing capacity by 900mAh from the predecessor. The phone also supports 22.5W reverse wired charging, allowing it to charge compatible accessories and other devices. Xiaomi hasn’t yet confirmed the regular wired charging speed for the Indian model.

The phone’s battery is likely to be its strongest pitch, particularly as large-capacity batteries are becoming more common in India’s affordable smartphone market. However, competitors such as the Realme P4 Power have pushed battery capacities beyond 10,000mAh, making battery life a more important area of competition.

For buyers considering an upgrade from the Redmi 15 5G, the larger battery and newer processor make the Redmi 17 5G worth waiting for. However, the Redmi 15 offers a 144Hz display refresh rate, so the newer model’s value will ultimately depend on its Indian price and the rest of its specifications.
