Tecno has just unveiled its first tri-fold concept foldable phone, named the Tecno Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept. The device features a dual-inward-folding mechanism, allowing users to utilise a tablet-sized display simply by unfolding the dual panels. This concept comes as a follow-up to the Phantom Ultimate 2 Tri-Fold Concept, which the brand showcased last year.

Tecno shared the news through a press release, right before the Galaxy Unpacked July 2025 event, according to a report by 9to5Google. The company announced that the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept will make its official debut in mid-July. For the unversed, the ‘Phantom’ series is the brand’s dedicated lineup for high-end and flagship phones including the Phantom X2, Phantom V Flip2, and Phantom V Fold2, Tecno’s latest foldable phone available for purchase.

Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, a popular, commercially available tri-fold phone in China, the Tecno Phantom G Fold Concept will fold inwards to avoid potential damage to the flexible display. The Mate XT folds outwards and utilises the same display for multiple form factors, such as single screen, dual-screen, and triple screen. The Phantom G Fold, on the other hand, has a dedicated cover screen like any other traditional foldable phone, while the inner flexible display can be unfolded to a tablet-sized form for an expanded view.

Right before the official announcement, Ice Universe, a renowned smartphone tipster, shared several images of the Tecno Phantom G Fold Concept’s design. The tipster also notes that the foldable will remain a concept device with no plans for mass production. Upon analysing the images, it appears that the tri-fold phone is sleek when completely unfolded, and its body is divided into three parts using hinges when seen from the rear.

When unfolded, the left portion of the Phantom G Fold features a large cover display, which appears to have a similar height and width to a traditional smartphone. The middle portion houses horizontally aligned triple cameras with an LED flashlight, and the right portion is completely blank. While the battery capacity is unknown, we assume every portion of the device features a battery that collectively powers the foldable smartphone.

In other news, the President & Head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung, TM Roh, has said that Samsung will launch its long-awaited tri-fold phone this year. While the name hasn’t been confirmed, it is rumoured to be called the Galaxy G Fold and will also likely be a dual-inward foldable phone.

Whenever Tecno decides to bring the tri-fold to the market, we can expect the device to undercut Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold phone. Based on past track record, Tecno prices its foldables lower than the competition, like the Phantom V Fold 2, which launched at a starting price of Rs 89,990 compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s Rs 1,64,999 price tag. The same could be the case with its tri-fold once the technology gains traction.

While tri-folds still face durability and mass-market readiness hurdles, Tecno’s concept shows ambition. If priced right, it could push innovation where it’s needed most: affordability. Tecno may not be the first name that comes to mind when talking about cutting-edge foldables, but with the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept, the brand is clearly signaling that it wants a seat at the innovation table, and possibly a shot at redefining how affordable tri-folds can be.
