Vivo S2 series tipped to launch in India, bringing back the S lineup after seven years

According to tipster Abhishek Yadav, the upcoming phones will target the mid-range segment, although specifications and chipset details are still unknown. The original Vivo S1 launched in India back in 2019 at Rs 17,990. At the time, it was slightly ahead of the curve for its price. AMOLED displays and in-display fingerprint scanners were still not common in this segment, and Vivo packaged those features alongside a 32MP selfie camera and MediaTek’s Helio P65 chipset. The company later launched the S1 Pro and S1 Prime before gradually retiring the lineup.

Why Vivo may be bringing the S-series back

The possible comeback doesn’t feel random when you look at how Vivo’s portfolio has changed over the years. When the S-series disappeared, Vivo’s V-series became the company’s main mid-range lineup, while iQOO handled more performance-focused online phones. But over time, pricing across the market has shifted upward with the V-series going well past Rs 40,000.

Even iQOO’s Z-series, once known for offering strong specs below Rs 15,000, now starts closer to Rs 25,000. That has left a fairly open space in the Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 range where Vivo does not currently have a very strong online-focused option. The Y-series has multiple models but they are mostly popular offline. That segment, meanwhile, has become one of the busiest parts of the smartphone market. Brands like POCO, Lava and Redmi compete heavily with AMOLED displays, fast charging, fast screens, and large batteries becoming standard. That essentially means Vivo cannot rely on the same formula that worked for the S1 in 2019.

The spec sheet will decide whether the S2 series ends up being a serious value-focused option or simply another mid-range phone. If Vivo positions the phones aggressively, the S2 lineup could give buyers another option in a segment that has become increasingly competitive but also expensive over the last few years.
