Xiaomi has confirmed that it will be launching the Xiaomi 17 Ultra in China on December 25th, marking a timeline earlier than usual for its top-end Ultra flagship. Xiaomi has also revealed the design of the device, giving us our first proper look at the upcoming camera-centric flagship.
Notably, the China launch of the Ultra mostly happens well into the next calendar year. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra launched in China in late February just ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, followed by sales in the initial weeks of March. By moving the launch forward, Xiaomi seems to be getting ahead of rivals and grab attention during the Christmas holiday season.
In terms of design, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra doesn’t break new ground but does simplify things. The handset retains the large circular camera unit that has become characteristic of the Ultra lineup, featuring the Leica camera branding in the centre and ‘Ultra’ lettered on the top left. The camera unit looks like it has shrunk a bit, while there is no secondary rear screen that was found on the Xiaomi 17 Pro models. For now, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra has been teased to come in the classic black and white colour options.
A minor but noteworthy change is that the phone now has circular volume buttons, split into individual keys. It’s an understated design transition but definitely brings back memories of older smartphones such as the iPhone 4 series and some older Sony Xperia models. Another change Xiaomi is making is moving to a flat display with rounded corners. This is a a direction many brands are taking for better grip, fewer accidental touches, and improved durability.
Not surprisingly, cameras are the USP of the device. Xiaomi is marketing the 17 Ultra as their next-generation night photography flagship, and the hardware seems to support that claim. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra will reportedly house a 1-inch Omnivision OV50X main sensor featuring LOFIC technology, which should improve the dynamic range significantly, even in difficult lighting conditions such as firework photography or night cityscape photography. The highlight is a brand-new 200MP Samsung periscope telephoto camera with Leica APO certification, which will improve long-range shots, macro shots, as well as zoom. These are also areas where Ultra phones from Samsung and Vivo have been pushing hard.
Further, there are rumours that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will house the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, along with a 6,800mAh battery. It could support 100W wired and 80W wireless charging.
Pricing could be where opinions split. With rising component costs, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is expected to start at around CNY 6,999 (around Rs 89,000), making it pricier by CNY 500 (around Rs 6,400) compared to its predecessor which cost Rs 1,09,999 in India. The hike would pit it directly against premium flagships from Samsung and Apple, but if Xiaomi manages to deliver clear gains in telephoto performance and low-light photography, the higher price may make sense to buyers.
