The endurance and build of a rhino
20 Jul 2013 By Kajal Basu On flipkart.com

I've been using the B480 since mid-November 2012 - and by "using", I mean abusing it, since that is what my job as a datajournalist demands. It crashed once and I had to reformat it - but it wasn't the comp's fault: I had tried loading and diddling with Ubuntu without the safety of a separate partition, and the whole shebang just shuddered and shut down. Other than that, it has performed masterfully. It came with 2GB RAM, but I installed 8GB 1600 DDR3 SDRAM at the outset and then upped it to 12GB (8+4). It's not commonly known, but the architecture can take 16GB, but you have to pay attention to the latencies when you buy the RAM/s. It can also be overclocked if you're looking for that rush of digital amphetamine - but then the heat build-up is so steep and sudden that it can leave a burn-mark on the outer skin of the thighs. The only solution is an excellent cooler mat, of which, fortunately, there are many in the market. But however much you overclock it and RAMbo it, it will never make for a high-end gaming machine. In fact, it'll never make for much of a gaming machine at all. If that's what you want, look elsewhere and pay a bomb more. Likewise, this system's OEM speakers are crap: If you want to watch a film at a good volume, just buy a third-party set of USB speakers (again, there are plenty of very decent, not expensive dual-speaker sets in the market, but if you want a 'cinematic' experience, it would help to spend a bit on a decent USB multichannel sound adapter). The screen res and the colour fidelity won't leave you smoking from your ears if your DVD is of good quality - and as long as you don't bury your nose in the screen. If you do... well, remember that this isn't retina display, and ignore the pixels. But if, like me, you need this machine for single-minded, psychotic work - I have up to 35 browser windows open at any given time, for up to 48 hours nonstop (which again pumps out monumental gobbets of heat) - this laptop won't even wince. It looks like farm machinery - all black, no chrome, as fugly as a Toshiba once used to be. But look at the specs - 2 X 2 USB ports, 2 X 3 USB ports, a keypad that doesn't mind being poked and prodded; a keypad that won't win any prizes - the gutters between the keys are wide as a bus - but has superb haptic feel and from which the keys will never be uprooted (I should know: my kittens scrabble all over them every chance they get). The letdown is the 500GB HDD, but I've beaten the disappointment by going in for an aftermarket 2 TB hybrid drive. It's also advisable to do the rounds of the Lenovo site once every two months - at least - for updates (the Lenovo Solution Centre has to be pushed to do its job), and also scrub the system thoroughly to maintain its rhino-like invulnerability. Keep an eye on the PSU and the fan - in short, the heat build-up: It's not that the machine will go up in flames, but if you're working with singleminded devotion - and who am I to presume that you aren't? - you might just suddenly discover that your thighs look like burnt 'baingan'. For the price, this is a good machine. The same config in other brands goes for 10K more. As far as I know, the B480 Essential is one of those very short test runs that manufacturers slip into the market for a brief while just to gauge the response and get the potential customers panting. Grab it while you can.
