Triggered by an inevitable collision course that Dune Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday were headed towards (December 18, 2026 release) and Warner Bros.’ complete takeover of IMAX screens for the theatrical release of Dune, Disney couldn’t be cornered and has just announced its own theatrical format dubbed, ‘Infinity Vision’.
Designed specifically to counter the monopoly of IMAX as the go-to format for Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, Infinity Vision is not a capture format, where it is shot using any special cameras. Instead, it is Disney certifying partner screens with a studio-sanctioned standard of excellence. Going beyond a mere badge for a multiplex, Disney has put some stringent parameters in place for a PLF screen to qualify as an Infinity Vision certified screen. A minimum screen size of 50ft is required along with high-brightness, high-contrast laser projection being mandatory and immersive spatial audio with Dolby Atmos 7.1 being the baseline.
The visual fidelity, complemented by a requirement for high-channel-count spatial audio where the acoustics are as meticulously calibrated as the optics promises to create a truly three-dimensional soundstage. Think of it as the Micheline-starred restaurant equivalent of cinema screens.
For the Indian audience, this evolution might be spearheaded by the country’s leading luxury exhibitors, primarily PVR-Inox and Cinépolis. Although no official announcement has been made by domestic players, all technical requirements point towards the existing P[XL], BIGPIX, and Macro XE auditoriums in major metros as they already possess the necessary Barco laser projectors and expansive canvases to meet these new standards. International, the official rollout begins this September with a re-release of Avengers: Endgame, featuring never-before-seen footage of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. This serves as a test-bed to the Doomsday premiere on December 18, 2026.
Disney’s Infinity Vision could be a win for the intellectual moviegoer since it strips away the marketing fluff and mandates a high-quality baseline. If you’re spending on a premium ticket for the next Avengers, this badge will ensure you aren’t just paying for a larger seat, but for the most sophisticated optical and acoustic engineering available in modern cinema.
