Official submission of Ukraine for the 'Best International Feature Film' category of the 96th Academy Awards in 2024.
As the film won an Oscar for Best Feature Documentary, The director said in his Oscar's acceptance speech: "I wish I had never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities."
Mstyslav Chernov was highly grateful to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary as - two years into the Ukrainian war - he felt that the urgency of helping his country was starting to fade through war fatigue. Keeping Ukraine in the headlines, whether it be through an Oscar win, is crucial in helping defeat the Russians.
This is the highest grossing documentary in Ukrainian history.
Only 10% of the material shown here was beamed out from the city itself. Electricity and internet connections were some of the first casualties of the Russian invasion. The rest of the footage was successfully smuggled out in a Red Cross convoy.
