TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The film was shot almost completely with hand-held cameras.

The title comes from the work of Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts in the early twentieth century. MacDougall weighed dying subjects in an attempt to prove that the human soul was material and measurable. His experiment is widely regarded as flawed and unscientific.

The film was shot in chronological order (even though it's not in chronological order in its final cut).

Naomi Watts accepted the role without reading the script first.

At Sean Penn's urging, Naomi Watts hit him for real during an emotionally charged scene between them.

Popular Dialogues

"[last lines] Paul Rivers: How many lives do we live? How many times do we die? They say we all lose 21 grams... at the exact moment of our death. Everyone. And how much fits into 21 grams? How much is lost? When do we lose 21 grams? How much goes with them? How much is gained? How much is gained? Twenty-one grams. The weight of a stack of five nickels. The weight of a hummingbird. A chocolate bar. How much did 21 grams weigh?"

"Paul Rivers: There are so many things that have to happen for two people to meet."
