To add drama to the soapbox derby races, screenwriter Corbin Bernsen wrote in a maneuver he termed "butt blast" that supposedly allows the driver to change the momentum of the car, but that in real life would violate the Principle of the Conservation of Momentum.
This movie was written in part to help raise funds and find new sponsors for the Akron Soap Box Derby. Product placements were made for companies making contributions to the Derby. Casting calls were made to gather extras and people to help with production from people living in the Akron, Ohio area. Thousands of people showed up for an opportunity to be in the movie and get their names in the credits.
Maureen Flannigan , Meg Foster, and Corbin Bernsen all acted in the Star Trek franchise (Bernsen in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), Foster and Flannigan in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)).
Corbin Bernsen wrote, directed, and starred in this move. The movie was mostly filmed in Taft, California. Taft is the birthplace of Corbin's mother, Jeanne Cooper. The character, Young Roy, is portrayed by Corbin's real life son, Finley Bernsen. The Production Design was by Oliver Bernsen, another of Corbin's sons.
