The plot of the film is similar to a real-life incident that occurred in 2003 to pizza delivery man Brian Douglass Wells, depicted in Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist (2018). The writers said they only had "vague knowledge" of this case before writing. Wells's sister publicly lambasted the film saying she doesn't 'think it's funny to laugh at the innocent who are victimized by criminals, who care nothing for human life."
The restaurant for which Jesse Eisenberg drives is a real restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the film takes place. It is called Vito's Pizza, as shown in the movie. As of January 2021, it is still in business.
