This production of "A Doll's House" originated on the stage, but the only ones retained for this movie from the stage production were Claire Bloom, director Patrick Garland, and play adaptor Christopher Hampton.
This was one of two major British movies based on Ibsen's play to be released in 1973. The other was directed by Joseph Losey, with Jane Fonda in the leading role. The movies were released in the U.K. within a very short time of each other. Both were box-office failures.
"A Doll's House" originally opened in the U.S. at Palmer's Theater on December 21, 1889, and has been revived on Broadway eight times as of 2008.
Sir Anthony Hopkins, Anna Massey and Sir Ralph Richardson all appeared in The Looking Glass War (1970).
