The scene where Mary Peach's character goes out "on the town" shows her exiting a theater into a grand lobby where she meets friends. That lobby is the actual foyer of the San Francisco Opera House, which looks virtually the same to this day.
This was the final film former MGM costume designer Irene worked on. She committed suicide the fall of 1962 prior to the release of this film. Irene provided a very simple understated wardrobe for British actress Mary Peach in this film.
Robert Lansing goes on to become Brig. General Frank Savage who commands a hard luck outfit in WWII, the 918th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force, in the TV series 12 O'Clock High (1964-1967).
To familiarize himself with the B-52 and it's flying characteristics, Rock Hudson flew on a short mission out of Walker AFB, Roswell NM.
The TWA airliner that brings Mrs. Caldwell (Mary Peach) to San Francisco (SFO) is a Boeing 707 - the civilian transport aircraft developed from the Boeing 367-80 seen somewhat frequently in this movie. The "707" model designator was chosen because Boeing wanted a number that "looked like it was flying". (This led to Boeing's entire "7X7" aircraft designation series, and will eventually lead to "7X77".)
"Sgt. Banning: Well, sir, I used to be a pretty slow "walker" myself. I mean, you really had to build a fire under my tail to get me to move. Then one day, General Hewett dropped in to have a little talk with us. And he built one hell of a fire. Only this one wasn't under my tail - he built a fire inside of me. Col. Jim Caldwell: Sergeant, if I'm reading you right, you think I'm building the wrong kind of fires around here. Sgt. Banning: Sir, I'm sure you can judge that better than I can."
"Gen. 'Happy Jack' Kirby: Col. Farr, you're aware of the peacetime regulation against sending up an aircraft without full power? Col. Hollis Farr: Yes, sir. Col. Jim Caldwell: Sir, we're simulating wartime conditions. I would have made the same decision. Gen. 'Happy Jack' Kirby: [scratches one cheek, then the other] So would I. And I'm not going to score it as an abort. [cracks a smile and exits] Col. Hollis Farr: We're in. Col. Jim Caldwell: He didn't even mention the bombing scores. Col. Hollis Farr: Oh, I'll guarantee you they're great. Listen, he smiled at you. When 'Happy Jack' smiles at a wing commander, that's like giving him the Airman Of The Year Award."
