Why should you watch Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu?
Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu, by Raja Ramamurthy, is a rare female-oriented Tamil movie which puts female desires at the centre of the plot. Starring Akshara Haasan, as the lead actor, the movie gives us two sides of her character, Pavithra. Initially, we see Pavithra be a pushover who has no say in her family. She’s a character whose mother decides what she’ll wear. Also, without pleading, she turns off the Television when Suresh Memnon, her father asks her to because his favourite batsman has got clean bold. Also, we see her putting up with a disturbing aunt who uninvitingly walks into her home and forces her to try new products.
The other side of Pavithra is absolutely the opposite. With Jessica and Rathi, she is being herself, just like most of the youngsters. Because she’s from an orthodox Tamil family she’s not allowed to eat non-veg at home. So, she eats fish with her friends secretly. Also, she tells her friends that she is dwelling on the idea to get intimate with her lover. And the entire storyline revolves around this part.
In Tamil film, adult comedy has always been about creating stuff that smells of double-meaning phrases and nasty sex jokes. No movie has tackled the issue sensitively or attempted to discuss sex education meaningfully. We have seen adult comedies in Tamil Cinemas but from men’s perspectives. The movie is unique for the fact that it discusses the basics of sex from a female perspective and does an excellent job of conveying the message.
Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu is a movie that normalises women taking the upper hand in sex and talking about it. So, we can say that the movie had progressive intentions. However, a few scenes of the movie were somewhat overwhelming. The primary reason for that is the movie in some parts seemed artificial and unrealistic to the proceedings. For instance, in the movie, we can see Pavithra inviting her boyfriend to the house given the fact that her neighbour lives just by the ground floor and takes a keen interest in others’ lives.
Nevertheless, Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu does not take pride in the story that it addresses gender concerns. The tone of the film is largely low-key. Also, the writing avoids utilising the humour elements to analyse the lead’s premise.
