Though the film is directed by 11 different directors, X: Past is Present is not an Anthology.
The idea for X came from film critic Sudhish Kamath, He wanted to shoot the film himself, but he could not because of lack of funds and time and "decided to take the idea forward and make it bigger in scope".
Thiyagarajan Kumararaja was unavailable, so Gautham Vasudev Menon agreed to direct his script. However, Menon was also out of the project, although he had started shooting his part in Puducherry and Nalan Kumarasamy, director of Soodhu Kavvum, subsequently replaced him to direct Kumararaja's segment.
The film did not have a theatrical release in British Columbia, Canada.
Released on 20 November with 115 screens and 265 shows across India.
