TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Reports of this film's failure are false. Variety (January 8, 1947) listed it as the #7 box office hit of 1946 (it was released December 28, 1945). The film earned more than $6M worldwide and earned a profit for MGM.

This film was Clark Gable's first after he returned to Hollywood following his service in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He had joined in August 1942, following the death of his wife Carole Lombard. MGM hyped this film as Gable's big comeback, using the line, "Gable's Back and Garson's Got Him!" in the advertising.

The only film Clark Gable starred in with Greer Garson and the second film he starred in with Joan Blondell.

Feature film debut of Barbara Billingsley - best known for her role as June Cleaver in the television series "Leave It to Beaver" and as the Jive Lady in Airplane! (1980).

Clark Gable wasn't too enamored with the film's tagline, "Gable's back and Garson's got him!" At a meeting to discuss the film, he proposed a new tagline, "He put the Arson in Garson." Greer Garson immediately countered that she would agree to this only if a second tagline were added: "She put the Able in Gable." This got a huge laugh at the meeting, to Gable's dismay, and he agreed it would be better to use the film's original tagline.

Popular Dialogues

"Harry Patterson: Are you washing again? Mudgin: Oh, hello, Harry. Kinda covets a man to scoop up some sea water that's full of the sins of the world, and put soap in it. Harry Patterson: You got sin on the brain. Mudgin: Well, it's be hard to explain to you, Harry, but a man sure feels dirty after he's been in port and done the things I done."

"Harry Patterson: There ain't a dame I can't forget in six months."
