The original version, the short version, was broadcast on PBS in 2008, and ran ninety minutes in one episode. The later version, the long version, was broadcast on PBS in 2012, and ran two hundred twenty-eight minutes in (four) fifty-seven minute episodes.
The four parts of the longer version were: "You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet (1923-1935)"; "Good War, Uneasy Peace (1935-1950)"; "Age of Anxiety: 1950-1969"; and "Starting Over: 1970-1990."
There is now a fifth part, "A Living Tradition: 1988-2008"
