TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Helmut Dantine's Egyptian soothsayer was dubbed by Sir Christopher Lee (uncredited).

Danielle Darrieux, who played Richard Burton's mother, was only eight years older than him.

Although Richard Burton and Stanley Baker had been close friends since they were teenagers, this was the only time they acted together in a movie. Burton later recorded the narration for Baker's movie Zulu (1964).

Charlton Heston turned down the title role, saying, "Alexander is the easiest kind of picture to make badly."

Richard Burton was twenty-nine at the time of filming, but many critics felt he already looked too old to play Alexander. He was supposed to be a teenager for the first hour.

Popular Dialogues

"Alexander: [Opening credits with anonymous voice-over:] It is men who endure toil and dare dangers that achieve glorious deeds. And it is a lovely thing to live with courage and to die leaving behind an everlasting renown."

"Nectenabus: There were signs of greatness at his birth! Quakes and storms shook the earth - and in the skies, a star fell... and two eagles perched upon the roof of the Queen's chamber. And in far-off Asia... the Temple of Ephesus was struck by lightning and burnt to the ground. Philip of Macedonia: And how did you read these signs, soothsayer? Nectenabus: The two eagles - that he was born to rule two worlds. The burning of the Temple - that a torch was kindled that day that would one day consume all the world. And this torch... your son. Philip of Macedonia: And the falling of the star? Olympias: That a god was born to me... *of* a god."
