In May 2012, local councillors in Staines voted to to officially rename the town "Staines-upon-Thames", in order to boost local economy and avoid gangland associations due to the negative portrayal of the town in this movie.
The only theatrical movie based on Sacha Baron Cohen's characters from his Ali G Show, which was not a mockumentary.
At the end of this movie, the airport building plan is switched from Ali's home in Staines to Slough, another town nearby. Both towns have a dismal reputation in the U.K. (as a policeman says to Ali, "Staines is shit hole." See also poem by John Betjeman: "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough"). So it is a natural joke for U.K. viewers.
The opening gangland dream sequence was shot in in "gangstaville", East Los Angeles, California. The rest of this movie was filmed in Staines-upon-Thames and London, England.
Reportedly, Sacha Baron Cohen apparently asked Madonna if she would like to make a cameo appearance, but she allegedly declined. However, Baron Cohen did appear as Ali G in the music video for "Music" in 2000.
"Ali G: BELONG? That's a very sexist way to talk about these bitches!"
"Ali G: Jezzy, iz you wearing green? I knew it - you iz defected to the Iver 'Eath posse, innit? Come on - let's stab him! Jezzy F: No, no - wait! Me mum, yeah, she put me yellow top in the wash with me brother's blue football socks even though they ain't colourfast. Ali G: All right. But you tell that slag, that in the ghetto, washing non-colourfast synthetics at 60 degrees could cost you your life..."
