STORY

Story
After straight-arrow district attorney Joseph Foster says in frustration that he would sell his soul to bring down a local mob boss, a smooth-talking stranger named Nick Beal shows up with enough evidence to seal a conviction. When that success leads Foster to run for governor, Beal's unearthly hold on him turns the previously honest man corrupt, much to the displeasure of his wife and his steadfast minister.

Ray Milland wore the same hat and suit throughout the film, while Audrey Totter had 21 changes of wardrobe.

Ray Milland claimed in a 1970s interview that John Farrow had let him direct one scene, his first try at directing.

Director John Farrow had assembled a complete cut of the film except for the final fade-out shot. After the scene was finished, he was able to preview the entire film just one hour later.

The waterfront bar was a recreation of San Francisco's historic First and Last Chance Saloon.
