After Arthur Hiller had his credit changed to Alan Smithee, the Director's Guild of America retired the name Alan Smithee. This is the last movie to ever bear that pseudonym officially. However, due to the name's infamy, up to the present day numerous non-DGA and independent films all over the world make unofficial unauthorized use of it.
During post-production, Joe Eszterhas announced through the media that Cinergi Pictures didn't have the money to pay for a soundtrack. He said he would finance the soundtrack himself, and asked artists to submit tracks for it. He received nine thousand two hundred CDs and cassettes, mostly from unknown, unsigned artists. He listened to a few tracks from each album, and compiled the soundtrack.
Arthur Hiller removed his name from the credits after the film's production company, Cinergi Pictures, preferred the cut made by producer and writer Joe Eszterhas over Hiller's cut.
"Alan Smithee" exclaims that the movie is "worse than Showgirls (1995)", also written by Joe Eszterhas.
Eric Idle himself said in various interviews meant to promote this movie that "this is rather dreadful".
"Alan Smithee: It's worse than "Showgirls"!"
"Alan Smithee: [during an editing session] No, no, no! You've sodomised it!"
