James Stewart's final film.
John Cleese turned down the role of Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast (1991) to play Cat R. Waul in this film.
Though undetected for decades, there is a penis doodle hidden in the film. It's visible in the DVD and VHS versions. At the 46:20 mark of the film, while Tanya is singing Dreams to Dream, a penis doodle appear's in front of her face for one frame. It is very obvious that when the animator was tracing Tanya from the animation paper onto the cel paper, he messed up on her nose, muzzle, and mouse teeth, turning the cel paper on backwards to retrace her without clearing the mistake (as the mark was in ink), didn't bother discarding the cel paper due to product expenses, leaving this unintentional Easter egg looked like such. However, it was removed on Blu-ray release.
This film was released on the same day (November 22, 1991) as the Walt Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast (1991).
Owing to creative differences, Don Bluth parted ways with Steven Spielberg, with whom he had directed the original An American Tail (1986), as well as the first of 13 Land Before Time films. With no Bluth in sight for the sequel, Spielberg instead relied on Phil Nibbelink, a former Disney animator, and Simon Wells, the grandson of science-fiction author H.G. Wells, to direct the project.
"Wylie Burp: Just remember, Fievel - one man's sunset is another man's dawn. I don't know what's out there beyond those hills. But if you ride yonder... head up, eyes steady, heart open... I think one day you'll find that you're the hero you've been looking for."
"Wylie Burp: Let this sleepin' dog lie, son. Dog-gone it, I'm dog tired. I'm tired of leading the dog's life and fightin' likes cats and dogs against cats and dogs, a young pup's doggin' my trail tryin' to become top dog. I'm going to the dogs in a dog eat dog world, son. I... I'm so far over the hill... I'm on the bottom of the other side."
