While the stars of the film perform most of their own live singing, Marion Cotillard's operatic vocals are dubbed by Catherine Trottmann.
Annette was not conceived as a movie; it was originally intended to be a Sparks album. Sparks had previously written and recorded a narrative musical titled 'The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman' in 2009. With an extensive cast. it proved too difficult to tour. so the band wrote Annette. The piece was being readied to release and tour when they met Leos Carax at Cannes after featured a Sparks song in his film Holy Motors (2012).
Simon Helberg was so eager to get the part that he became a French citizen and learned French, as the production needed more EU citizens in the cast to get EU funding. It turned out to be unnecessary as Marion Cotillard was cast in the role previously given to Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams.
While filming in Brussels, Leos Carax's dog "Javelot" got scared by passing traffic and ran away, leading Adam Driver to post a filmed appeal on social media to help find the dog, re-tweeted by several people including Mark Hamill. Javelot was then found safe and sound in a nearby train station.
Leos Carax's English-language film debut.
"[first lines] The Narrator: Ladies and gentlemen, we now ask for your complete attention. If you want to sing, laugh, clap, cry, yawn, boo or fart, please, do it in your head, only in your head. You are now kindly requested to keep silent and to hold your breath until the very end of the show. Breathing will not be tolerated during the show. So, please take a deep, last breath right now. Thank you."
"The Accompanist: [while conducting an orchestra] It's a fast changing world. I am now the conductor of the city's finest orchestra. No longer the self-deprecating accompanist from such a short while ago. Ann would be proud of me. I do have my suspicions, though, about why she isn't alive. And doubts, too, about something else, but... Excuse me a minute. [goes back to conducting] The Accompanist: Henry has invited me to his place tomorrow, to discuss a matter that he says concerns Annette, and Ann. As awkward as it is for me to attend, anything that concerns Ann and the future of Annette is something that concerns me. Excuse me one more time. [goes back to conducting] The Accompanist: My love for Ann has never died. Neither has my regret that our affair was only an affair. I had. been hoping for so long. Then at a time when she was in despair, we started an affair. But the very next week, she met Henry. That was the end of it, the end of me. I'll always regret that. I deeply miss her - her warmth, her voice. I miss Ann. Excuse me. [goes back to conducting]"
