The dogs used here are NOT Sakhalin Huskies. SH are sadly almost extinct now. Fewer than 10 remain. The traces of them can be seen in rare Long Coat Akitas, aka Woolies. Akitas were crossbred with SH in an effort to make bigger, stronger sled dogs. Only a handful of Akita bloodlines still carry the recessive gene from SH giving them the kong hair not seen in American or Japanese Akitas. Several movies have been made about this expedition.
Story centers around Japan's first Antarctic research exploration team based at the Showa Station.
Drama series "Nankyoku Tairiku" is to commemorate TBS's 60th anniversary.
