The main protagonists Deunan Knute and Briareos are refereed to as Appleseeds. It is explained by Hitomi that the duo are like Appleseeds and wherever they will travel, they will bring hope and others will follow them.
The film is a reboot to the original "Appleseed" directed by Shinji Aramaki and follows a different series of events and does not follow the "Appleseed" movie canon, despite being directed by the same director of the previous movies.
This is the only entry in the series where the English was recorded first. A Japanese dub followed later.
This is a prequel to the previous Appleseed movies.
