Rotten TomatoesKelly Fremon Craig's adaptation of Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" beautifully captures the essence of the young adult novel. The film follows Margaret Simon's transition from a carefree summer camp in New Hampshire to the bustling streets of 1970s New York City and eventually settles into a Norman Rockwell-esque suburban setting in New Jersey. Abby Ryder Fortson delivers a wonderful performance as Margaret, navigating the challenges of adolescence and the power of friendship. The movie explores Margaret's journey of self-discovery, not only in terms of her biological development but also in relation to religion. Rachel McAdams shines as Margaret's mother, Barbara, adding depth to the story by portraying the sacrifices and internal struggles women face while building their families. However, the film's uneven scripting and editing make it challenging to fully integrate Barbara's journey with Margaret's. Despite this minor flaw, the film remains a heartfelt coming-of-age story with compassionate portrayals of its characters. Kelly Fremon Craig's adaptation successfully captures the spirit of the novel while adding a fresh perspective.

First published in 1970, the novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume is considered a children's classic. It has never been out of print since its initial publication; in 2010, Time Magazine put it on a list of the 100 best novels published since 1923, and in 2012 it made Scholastic Parent & Child Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Books for Kids. However, starting almost from its first publication, it has long also been one of the most challenged and banned books in America: parents, administrators, and politicians have often tried to get the book removed from school libraries and reading lists both because of its honest examination of puberty and menstruation and because it depicts a girl who is given the freedom to decide for herself what religion she is interested in adhering to.
Elle Graham, who plays Nancy Wheeler, played Chief Jim Hopper's daughter Sara in the first series of "Stranger Things", which also had a character named Nancy Wheeler.
The author of the book that the movie is based on, Judy Blume, has a cameo as a woman walking a dog.
Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates both starred in "Midnight in Paris" (2011).
