This was the first ever production that secured permission from the French government to film in the catacombs. The film utilizes a set of narrow, winding tunnels of the Paris catacombs, complete with real mint skeletons creepily arranged centuries ago.
Ben Feldman (George) actually suffers from minor claustrophobia. He had to keep taking breaks to cope with it.
The nightclub Scarlett is in when she is looking for Papillon is a real nightclub in Paris, and DJ Axiom was actually performing a set during the filming of the scene.
When Scarlett and George are in the clock tower discussing her journey to Iran to find the Rose key, the bell and clock mechanism begin to move by themselves. This might signify the foreshadowing of Georges own life as he resembles the life of Dante in the Inferno who is forced off a road against his will having to go through hell itself. Also note the encounter with the police officer near the entrance to the catacombs. This may also symbolize the she wolf in the Inferno, forcing George to go into the catacombs when he insists that he will not.
"As Above, So Below" is a saying from Occult Lore.
"Scarlett: As above, so below. As I believe the world to be, so it is."
"George: 'Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.' Scarlett: Oh. Papillon: What? Scarlett: According to mythology, that's the inscription over the gates of hell. Papillon: What? I'm... I'm not going in there."
