Towards the end of the movie, when Sergeant Süleyman leaves his home to go to mosque, he greets an old man who is reading his newspaper in front of a cafe on the street. That old man is the real life Süleyman who was 91 years old at the time. Unfortunately, he died within two months after the premiere, while the film was still in general release.
Based on a true story.
On Dec. 7, 2017 Suleyman Dilbirligi, who adopted a five-year-old Korean orphan girl during the Korean War, died at the age of 91 in Istanbul after 1 month in intensive care. Dilbirligi had adopted Eunja Kim during the war and named her "Ayla." One day after the death of her husband, Nimet Dilbirligi died from grief.
