The film is partly autobiographical, in that many of the events that happen to Hal and Oliver are based on Mike Mills' own father having begun a gay relationship after Mike's mother died.
Ewan McGregor was not a dog owner before he made the film. During the course of the shoot, he decided that he absolutely had to get a dog and is now the proud owner of a poodle named Sid.
At 82 years of age, Christopher Plummer won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this film and became the oldest person to ever win an Oscar for acting.
Mike Mills did not originally intend for Anna to be French, but after asking Mélanie Laurent if she could completely lose her accent and finding out she could not, he changed the character for her.
The laryngitis idea used at the costume party is based on a true story that happened to Lou Taylor Pucci, star of Mike Mills' previous film Thumbsucker (2005). Pucci had lost his voice at an audition for Across the Universe (2007) and had indeed gone to a party where he conversed with a girl that he met via a notepad.
"Anna: Why do you leave everyone? Why did you let me go? Oliver: Maybe because I... I don't really believe that it's gonna work, and then I make sure that it doesn't work."
"Hal: Well, let's say... Oliver: Arthur, down! Hal: ...let's say since you were little, and... and you... you always dreamed of... of someday getting a lion, and you wait and you wait and you wait and you wait, and the lion doesn't come. Then along comes a giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe. Oliver: I'd wait for the lion. Hal: That's why I worry about you."
