Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World Review

"Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World" is a biopic that follows the life of George Foreman, from his impoverished youth to becoming a boxing legend and his religious transformation. Directed by George Tillman Jr., the film covers the significant events in Foreman's life, including his Olympic success and iconic fights with Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. However, the film primarily focuses on Foreman's comeback at an advanced age and weight, aiming to support his struggling youth community center. While the training montage is amusing and realistic, the film's emphasis on Foreman's spiritual rebirth lacks the same impact. The episodic drama feels formulaic and rushes through Foreman's life, failing to leave a vivid impression. Sullivan Jones delivers a charismatic portrayal of Muhammad Ali, bringing life to the scenes. Khris Davis impressively transforms physically for the title role, but his emotionally closed-off portrayal limits his performance. Forest Whitaker provides solid support as Foreman's loyal trainer. Overall, while Foreman's life is interesting, the film falls short in capturing its full potential.

TRIVIA

Trivia

When he fought Michael Moorer in Las Vegas, George Foreman wore the same red trunks that he wore in the Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa, Zaire (now DR Congo) in 1974. That legendary fight was the climactic scene of Muhammad Ali's biopic Ali (2001) with Will Smith as Ali and Charles Shufford as Foreman and remains Foreman's only loss by knockout. Furthermore, in both the Rumble in the Jungle and Foreman vs. Moorer, the older challenger was trailing the younger and undefeated champion on all of the judges' scorecards late in the fight before winning by knockout.Foreman's victory made him the oldest world heavyweight boxing champion in history at 45 years and 360 days, which beat Jersey Joe Walcott's old record by eight years and is a record that Foreman still holds. Since then, only Vitali Klitschko has been a world heavyweight champion aged 40 or older. Furthermore, only Bernard Hopkins has been a world boxing champion in any weight class at an older age than Foreman was after he beat Jean Pascal in 2011 for the light heavyweight championships.

Michael Kenneth Williams was originally cast as Charles "Doc" Broadus.
