Despite the 1969 copyright date on the title card, according to the date printed on a telegram shown during the scene immediately after the credits, the film was shot in August 1966.
The desert castle exteriors were shot in Lancaster, CA, at the actual Shea's Castle (aka Sky Castle or Castle Ranch) , built in 1924, which is now a private residence (filming took place in Aug 1966). This location was located 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
The introductory sequence was shot at Marineland, located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County. It remained open from 1954-87, when all the animals were moved to the Sea World facility in San Diego, CA.
Alexander D'Arcy acted in this film as a favor to writer/producer Rex Carlton.
