A duck struggles mightily, and finally hatches her eggs in the bitter cold, after candling them and seeing the chicks skiing, skating, and otherwise enjoying winter inside the shells. All but one, that is: poor little Robespierre. She doesn't notice until after the rest of the brood has gone swimming and Robespierre has sprouted legs and run off in search of warmth. He finds it, under a hibernating bear ("So I laid an egg"), but a wolf has followed him in and snatches the egg, with some help from a stick of TNT. What the wolf hasn't counted on is mama, who's right behind him, with a couple of eye-poking fingers at the ready. The wolf swaps a doorknob for the egg, and starts boiling the egg, but mama arrives in the nick of time only to be rejected by the baby, who was just getting warm.

TRIVIA

Trivia

The unhatched egg is named after Maximilien Francois Robespierre, one of the best-known and most influential figures of the French Revolution, who originated the expression "Omelettes are not made without breaking a few eggs".

The name Robespierre would also be the name of Wednesday Addams' classmate in The Addams Family TV series 20 years later.

The unhatched egg manages to break the fourth wall in this short. And so does the hibernating bear, the skinny mean wolf, and the duck mom, all very cleverly done.

The December calendar page hanging on the wall in the first scene is both current and accurate for when "Booby Hatched" first came out. The configuration of the dates match up with those of Dec. 1943. Since all the dates on this sheet except the last one have been "X"-ed out, it's fair to assume that the events in the cartoon are happening on Dec. 31, 1943. The actual release date of "Booby Hatched" was January 1, 1944.

Robespierre mentions the ongoing fuel oil shortage, which wartime cinema audiences would have appreciated. Gasoline, fuel oil, rubber tires, and many more everyday items were rationed for the ongoing war effort, with D Day just around the corner.
