Producer Patricia Lovell originally offered the directing job on this film to director Peter Weir who had directed Lovell's previous period film Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) about a year earlier.
Collaborating on this film were director Ken Hannam and production designer Wendy Dickson who were a married couple.
