First theatrical feature film from Australian production house Boulevard Films. Their first had actually been Backstage (1988) but that property was bought out by the Burrowes Film Group.

Debut cinema movie directed by Australian television director Pino Amenta.

The name of the stage play that Tom Garfield (John Waters) wrote which had become a smash hit on Broadway was "The Human Heart".

The phrase that Tom Garfield (John Waters) used that was a famous quote for him was: "Success teaches you how to be an asshole and failure teaches you how to be human".

The picture was nominated for seven Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Editing and Best Cinematography but winning two - for Best Actor (John Waters) and Best Supporting Actor (Kim Gyngell).
