Instead of having the usual 555 prefix used in movies and television, a phone number used by God (Morgan Freeman) was an actual phone number in many U.S. area codes, causing owners of that phone number to be bombarded with calls. For the video release, this number was changed to 555-0123. The phone number used by Bruce later in the film was used by a radio station in Colorado and a woman in Florida, both of whom were deluged with calls wanting to talk with God. The producers bought these two phone numbers used in the film to stop the problems.
The monkey used in the alley scene is the same monkey that was featured in Outbreak (1995) and that played Marcel on the television series Friends (1994) also starring Jennifer Aniston. It also starred against Jim Carrey in both of the Ace Ventura movies.
Jim Carrey often insisted on doing upwards of thirty takes of some scenes.
Egypt banned the film for its "sacrilegious content."
The address for God's company, 77256 23rd Street, spells Psalm 23 when dialed on a phone. Psalm 23 contains the famous lines "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want" and "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me", which express the Christian theme or universal trust in God.

Bruce: Bill, you've been running the Maid of the Mist for 23 years now. Tell me, why do you think I didn't get the anchor job? Bill, Ferry Owner: Hey, man, I don't want any problems... Bruce: [messes his hair] Is it my hair, Bill? Are my teeth not white enough? Or, like the great falls, is the bedrock of my life eroding beneath me? [sticking his face into the camera] Bruce: Eroding, eeeeroding, eeeeerodding. Jack: Cut the feed. Cut to black. Control Booth Operator: I'm on it. Bruce: I'm Bruce Nolan for Eyewitness News.
