Due to declining sales, California Typewriter - the shop portrayed in this documentary feature- had to shut down business in 2020.
Director Doug Nicol, an avid collector of typewriters, was hoping to boost business for California Typewriter with this documentary. Nevertheless, California Typewriter shut down business in 2020 due to declining revenue.
Director Doug Nicol came across California Typewriter while looking for a shop to have his broken typewriter fixed. This encounter inspired him to portray California Typewriter and the typewriter community over a five-year-span. Once the film got released, California Typewriter became a destination for typewriter fans from all over the world.
During production, director Doug Nichol bought 85 typewriters. He had almost all of them fixed at California Typewriter.
