IMDbLegendary genre director Joe Dante said he decided to be executive producer on this film in order to help mentor young filmmakers much like he was mentored by people who were already in the business and were successful, including Roger Corman and Steven Spielberg. He said "If I didn't have those people in my corner, I wouldn't have been able to do the work that I did. And so it's in the spirit of giving back that my little company looks for material. Not blockbuster expensive material, but makable material from young filmmakers who could use a little help in trying to put together their projects."
In the scene where Chad Michael's character checks his mail, the envelopes show his street address as 742 Evergreen Terrace, which also happens to be the same street address as The Simpsons characters.
Courtney Gains also appeared in The 'Burbs (1989), which was directed by Joe Dante, who executive produced this film.
The script has a little fun at Executive Producer Joe Dante's expense. While driving to the camp, the gang is listening to a radio personality named Rockin' Ricky. Rockin' Ricky is also the name of the local disc jockey in "Gremlins" (1984). Dante directed both "Gremlins" and it's sequel.
"Jack: Do you know why I hired you, Emma? Emma: No Jack: Because you believe. You want to see something... to know that there is something out there. Just like I used to. Emma: You don't anymore? Jack: Naw. I mean, I'll turn it on when the cameras are on and I'll give 'em a show but... if there was something out there, I would have seen it by now. Emma: Then what are we doing here? Jack: I told you. Because you believe. Maybe I was never the one they wanted to talk to."
