Was the first feature-length movie to be shot with the Red One Digital Camera, as well as the first mainstream film to be shot in the 4K resolution. (Part One was also shot with this camera, but Part Two was shot first so Benicio Del Toro could gradually regain the weight he lost for this film)
Although Benicio Del Toro was always considered the absolute first choice to headline this film, Val Kilmer was considered as a secondary option to play Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara if Del Toro had not been available.
Benicio Del Toro chose Ryan Gosling to play Benigno 'Beni' Ramírez. Gosling met with the real Ramirez and learned some Spanish to prepare for role. But delays during pre-production caused Gosling to drop out of the project.
According to Lou Diamond Phillips, he did constant language drills with a vocal coach to learn his lines in Spanish. When he arrived on the set, the part was completely rewritten and he had to do more constant drills to learn his new lines.
Che: Part One (2008) and this film were screened combined at the Cannes Film festival 2008 under the title "Che".
"Ernesto Che Guevara: To survive here, to win... you have to live as if you've already died."
"[last lines] Ernesto Che Guevara: [to a Bolivian soldier about to execute him] Shoot. Do it."
