Chucky's full name, Charles Lee Ray, is derived from the names of notorious killers Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald (assassin of John F. Kennedy) and James Earl Ray (assassin of Martin Luther King).
Catherine Hicks (Karen) and Kevin Yagher (Chucky's creator) met on set and were married a year later.
In the scene where Chucky runs behind Maggie in the hallway, Chucky was actually played by Alex Vincent's younger sister.
The film used various ways to portray Chucky, including RC animatronics and little people or child actors. Various animatronics and cosmetics were used for every scene throughout the movie, Chuckie's cosmetics transition from looking toy-like to a more human look. The film created multiple Chucky animatronics such as a flailing tantrum Chucky, a walking Chucky, and a stationary Chucky. The animatronics face was controlled by a remote control through a rig that goes on one's face and captures facial movements.
The first draft of the script was completed in the summer of 1985 and referenced Chucky as Buddy who came to life after mixing blood with Andy and killed those against Andy (for example, the babysitter and teacher) manifesting Andy's loneliness and isolation from an overworked mother and absent father. In addition to being a more psychologically driven horror film, "Buddy" also only came alive at night when Andy was asleep. Many scenes from later sequels originated in this draft like Andy's teacher's death and the climax set in the toy factory, (Child's Play 2) ending with the the blood mixing with the melted plastic that begins to swirl, (Child's Play 3) and Andy's teenage babysitter getting electrocuted. (Bride of Chucky). Buddy was supposed to have a pullstring in his back to speak, and later when it was revealed he was alive, he would pull it father out of his back, to the point where his voice deepens and tries to use the string the strangle Karen.
"Karen Barclay: [she grabs Chucky] Talk to me. [pause] Karen Barclay: Come on, talk! [pause] Karen Barclay: I said, "talk to me", damn it! [Chucky gives no answer] Karen Barclay: All right! I'll make you talk! [Karen grabs Chucky, lights up her fireplace and holds Chucky near the fire] Karen Barclay: I SAID TALK TO ME, DAMN IT, OR ELSE I'M GONNA THROW YOU IN THE FIRE! [Chucky comes alive] Chucky: [screams] YOU STUPID BITCH, YOU FILTHY SLUT! I'LL TEACH YOU TO FUCK WITH ME! [Chucky attacks Karen]"
"Chucky: Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?"
