TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Hume Cronyn was a Golden Glove boxer and lost sight in one eye. In the scene where he hits the young orderly, without depth perception, he actually hit the young man and knocked him out.

According to Ron Howard, several members of the cast liked to get into hypothetical discussions about the chance their characters were offered in the film. Maureen Stapleton was dead against it, while Don Ameche said he'd be the first in line.

The Boca Ciega Bay house of Dr. Chester and Doris Babat was rented by the production and renovated for filming of the pool scenes with a makeshift temporary structure built over their outdoor pool. The homeowners later built a permanent pool house based on the film's exact design, where they still relax many years later.

Wilford Brimley was only forty-nine years old at the time of the film's production (he was fifty when it was released). He had to have his hair dyed gray in order to make him look geriatric.

Steve Guttenberg worked on this movie for less than his usual fee because he liked the script, and really wanted to work with Ron Howard.

Popular Dialogues

"Joseph Finley: [to Alma] They say if we go with them, we'll live forever. And that's good. It's probably going to take you an eternity to forgive me... Alma, I'm sorry. I guess I was being ridiculous. I'm sorry. I love you. You're my whole life. I wanna go. But if it's a choice of only six more months here with you or living forever all by myself, well I'll take the six more months here with you. I don't want to live forever if you're not going to be with me."

"Walter: I want you all to consider what I am about to suggest to you. You people seem to want what we've got. Well, we have room for you. We have room for you and about 30 of your friends. You would be students of course, but you'd also be teachers. And the new civilizations you would be travelling to would be unlike anything you've ever seen before. But I promise you, you will all lead productive lives. Ben Luckett: Forever? Walter: We don't know what forever is."
