All the interviewees were briefed that Philomena Cunk was a comedy parody character, and they were told to treat her like an ignorant child. They were also instructed to take the questions as seriously as possible, be respectful, and not make their own jokes. Some of the experts actually cracked up during the interview, but most of these parts have been edited out.
The writers did consult with a couple of religious experts to check the religious content and message.
This show led to an increased popularity for the Technotronic's song "Pump Up the Jam", which is featured as a running gag in the show. As of 2024, the music video was watched over 327 million times.
Philomena Cunk was originally intended to be a posh middle-class character. Diane Morgan did practice her lines as such, but during her audition, she was asked to use her natural Bolton accent.
