TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Joan Crawford later said about this film, "If Otto Preminger hadn't directed it, the picture would have been a mess. It came off. Sort of."

Otto Preminger told an interviewer in the 1970s that he had no memory of this film.

Henry Fonda and Dana Andrews appeared together in The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). Fonda was the main star and Andrews had a smaller but important part. In this movie, though, after the success of Laura (1944) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Andrews got billing over Fonda (second after Joan Crawford). And a decade later, Andrews would replace Fonda in the Broadway play "Two for the Seesaw". By that time, of course, Fonda was a huge star while Andrews either starred in b-movies or had smaller roles in A-movies.

Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda disliked the script, but had to do the picture to fulfill their contracts.

Joan Crawford was borrowed from Warner Bros. for this picture. This is even more interesting because Crawford wanted to the buy the film rights to the novel herself, but failed to submit a bid before 20th Century-Fox won.

Popular Dialogues

"Mary Angelus: Want to tell me where you're going, so I'll have something to lie about?"

"Mary Angelus: You cook like you paint, honey. Fast, colorful and glib."
