Most of the movies cast was from the town in which it was filmed.
Though the movie is set in Northern Ontario, the original stories in the book take place in Central Alberta, in and around the town of Hobbema (now known as Maskwacis), which is home to four native bands: Samson, Montana, Louis Bull and Ermineskin. Ermineskin also happened to be the last name of the narrator in the books, Silas.

"Bald Cop: Name? Frank Fencepost: Frank Fencepost. Bald Cop: Address? Frank Fencepost: Where do I live? Bald Cop: Yeah, where do you live? Frank Fencepost: I live where the land meets the sky. Where the eagle and the raven fly free. I live under the sun and the moon. Bald Cop: [to Silas] Where do you live? Silas Crow: I'm his neighbour."
"Robert McVey: What are these things? Totems? Silas Crow: Those are old car parts."
