The helicopter crash scene was the last to be shot, just in case any of the cast members got injured, which would delay filming.
Margot Robbie began training six months prior to shooting the film. Her training routine included gymnastics, boxing, weapons training, aerial silk training, and learning to hold her breath underwater for extended periods of time.
Margot Robbie revealed at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 that although the cast members of the squad had extensive rehearsals together, she and Jared Leto did not rehearse prior to filming their scenes. She and director David Ayer felt it added to the unpredictability and madness of Harley Quinn and the Joker.
The majority of the cast and crew got the tattoo "SKWAD" in honor of this film. The tattoos were even applied by some of the cast members, Margot Robbie and Will Smith.
Tom Hardy was originally cast as Rick Flag, but dropped out to do The Revenant (2015). Hardy had previously played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), who was a former member of the Suicide Squad in the comic books. Hardy later expressed his regret at leaving the role, given that he did not want to lose the work.
"Harley Quinn: Huh? What was that? I should kill everyone and escape? [to SEALs] Harley Quinn: Sorry. The voices. [chuckles] Harley Quinn: I'm kidding! Jeez! That's not what they really said."
"Amanda Waller: [narration] Before she ran off and joined the circus, she was known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. A psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. She was assigned to The Clown himself. The Joker: Dr. Quinzel. You know, I live for these moments with you. What do you got? Harley Quinn: I got you a kitty. The Joker: So thoughtful. Amanda Waller: [narration] She thought she was curing him, but she was falling in love. The Joker: There is something you could do for me, Doctor. Harley Quinn: Anything. I mean, yeah. The Joker: I need a machine gun Harley Quinn: A machine gun? Amanda Waller: [narration] Talk about a workplace romance gone wrong."
