Dawn Fraser once said of this biopic about her: "Everyone knows about Dawn Fraser, the Olympic champion. There are press cuttings three feet thick. But this film is also about part of my life the public knows nothing about...It's all true. There is no glossing over anything, and doubtless some people may be surprised at some aspects of my personal life".
Joy Cavill first talked to Dawn Fraser about making this feature film about her three years before the movie was first released, around 1975/1976,
This movie was filmed during September, October, November and December 1977.
Joy Cavill, this film's writer-producer, once said of developing the film script for this movie: "I told her [Dawn Fraser] I would only do it truthfully. There would be no attempt to whitewash anything she did...I decided that the really dramatic part of her life was between the ages of seventeen and thirty. The film concentrates a lot on her life after she gave up swimming. It was a very big change in her life, from being front page news all over the world to suddenly being nobody. That's told very candidly, and she was very brave to agree to do that. It took a lot of courage".
Producer and writer Joy Cavill was touted to direct this movie by various people as well as personnel from the Australian Film Commission and the South Australian Film Corporation.
