The computer screen and readout in the bunker near the end refer to 'Project Wildfire'. This was the code name used in The Andromeda Strain (1971), which deals with a crashed satellite that infects a community with a deadly organism. The zombie virus in Night of the Living Dead (1968) was blamed on a crashed space probe.
With this movie, all the installments in George A. Romero's original Dead Trilogy have been remade: Night of the Living Dead (1968) as Night of the Living Dead (1990); Dawn of the Dead (1978) as Dawn of the Dead (2004), and Day of the Dead (1985) as this movie (it would later be remade again as Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)). This makes it perhaps the only trilogy that has been completely remade, though none of the remakes are related to one another.
Christa Campbell plays Mrs. Leitner in this movie, and was a producer of the later remake Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017).
Despite the title most of the movie takes place at night.
Ving Rhames plays Captain Rhodes, the role that Joseph Pilato played in the original film. Rhames and Pilato both appeared in Pulp Fiction (1994).
