Garry Marshall first met Greg Kinnear when he guested on Later (1994). He was impressed by Kinnear's charisma, but did not know if he was an actor. Kinnear's performance in Sabrina (1995) finally convinced Marshall of his skill as an actor, and he earned his first lead role.

One of six films that Larry Miller has appeared in directed by Garry Marshall. The same is the case for Hector Elizondo, who's appeared in virtually all of the film's Marshall has directed as well.

A poster of the Tejano singer Selena can be seen in one scene, which it is hanging near the desk of Jon Seda, who plays Handsome. Jon stars in the movie 1997 movie "Selena" as her husband/lead guitarist, Chris Perez.

This is Greg Kinnear's first leading man role. He previously co-starred with Harrison Ford in the remake of Sabrina (1995) a year prior to this film in a supporting role.
