Much of the filming took place in Sandusky, Ohio, with the amusement park scenes filmed at Sandusky's Cedar Point, the amusement park where the writer actually worked when he was in high school.
While part of the film was set at The Ohio State University, a portion of the filming was completed at Oberlin College.
When he mentions having a radio show, he says the station call letters are WOSU. WOSU was the Classical music format Public Radio station. The student run station call letters were WOSR.
The story takes place from 1984 to 1985.
