While some actors like Fabrice Desplechin and László Szabó provide their own voices for the French dub of the film, the dub features some notable French actors such as Marina Hands voicing Esther, Philippe Laudenbach and Denis Podalydès.
Writer/Director Arnaud Desplechin was planning the film at the same time as he was working on his prior work, My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument (1996), with Emmanuelle Devos' character Esther in that film, being named and modeled after the one here.
Summer Phoenix auditioned three times before being offered the lead role.
