IMDbEx Machina is a science-fiction psychological thriller movie that revolves around a young programmer, Caleb, invited by his reclusive CEO, Nathan, to administer a Turing test on a beautiful and intelligent humanoid robot named Ava. As the test progresses, Caleb begins to develop feelings for Ava and starts to question Nathan's true motives. The film is known for its mesmerising cinematography and the outstanding performances by its cast. Indeed, performances by the cast including Alicia Vikander as Ava and Oscar Isaac as Nathan make it a superb watch. Director Alex Garland has managed to present a thought-provoking story based around the near-future concept of artificial intelligence taking over normal lives. The tension he builds throughout the runtime is commendable. Overall, Ex Machina is a complex story that touches upon science fiction, human psychology, and technology in a way that leaves a lasting impression and the concept stays with you even after the end credits are over.

Director Alex Garland has described the future presented in the film as "ten minutes from now," meaning, "If somebody like Google or Apple announced tomorrow that they had made Ava, we would all be surprised, but we wouldn't be that surprised."
The location of the house in the movie is the Juvet Landscape Hotel in Norway.
Oscar Isaac said he based his characterization of Nathan on Bobby Fischer and Stanley Kubrick, who he sees as mysterious, elusive geniuses. The now iconic look of the latter also served as an inspiration for his beard.
This recipient of the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects was made only on a budget of $15 million, and won the award over several big-budget movies like The Revenant (2015) ($135 million), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) ($150 million), and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) ($200 million).
The title derives from the Latin phrase "Deus Ex-Machina," meaning "a God from the Machine," a phrase that originated in Greek tragedies. An actor playing a God would be lowered down via a platform (machine) and solve the characters' issues, resulting in a happy ending.
"Nathan: One day the AIs are going to look back on us the same way we look at fossil skeletons on the plains of Africa. An upright ape living in dust with crude language and tools, all set for extinction. Caleb: I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds. Nathan: There you go again, Mr. Quotable. Caleb: There you go again. It's not my quote. It's what Oppenheimer said after he made Nathan, Caleb: The atomic bomb. Nathan: Yeah, I know what it is, dude."
"Ava: Isn't it strange, to create something that hates you?"
