The X-33 featured in the film was canceled in 2001, two years after the film was made. The cancellation was due to engineers having problems with the carbon composite hydrogen fuel tank, similar to the issues in the movie. As a result, the X-33 never flew.
Space Shuttle orbiter Atlantis, featured in the film, flew the last shuttle mission in July 2011, nearly four years before the film is set. It's currently on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
